A Face Like Glass

Neverfell is an outsider in the subterranean city of Caverna, a place where facial expressions are learned, and Facesmiths design new Faces for high paying courtiers. Outsiders are forbidden from entering and Cavernans cannot leave, all to protect the craft of their luxurious produce.

At five years old, Neverfell is discovered hiding in Cheesemaster Grandible’s tunnels with no memories or knowledge of where she came from. When the Cheesemaster sees her uncontrolled facial expressions, he knows she must hide her face from the rest of the city’s inhabitants. He takes her on as his apprentice and over the next seven years she learns the secrets of creating vision inducing cheeses. If only she could disguise the thoughts and feelings written clear as day on her face.

Believing she is so hideous she must wear a mask, Neverfell longs to escape the confines of the cheese tunnels and explore the wider world. When a famous Facesmith visits the Cheesemaster with a delicate request, Neverfell fails to understand why he declines and decides to help the beautiful lady herself, setting off a chain of events that will change the history of Caverna forever.

One day on a wild rabbit chase, Neverfell breaks free of Master Grandible’s cheese tunnels and finds herself embroiled in another girl’s plots, arrested for being an outsider and nearly killed by a mysterious figure. Thrust into life at Court, can Neverfell navigate the cut-throat politics, crazy Cartographers and assassination attempts to find out who she really is?

A wonderfully imaginative standalone novel where Wine wipes memories, Perfume bewitches, and cheese explodes.
